NEW MATERIAL: A compd. represented by formula I {A is H, 1-12C alkyl, -O- 1-12C alkyl, -CO- 1-12C alkyl, -C(O)O- 1-12C alkyl, -CH, -NCS or -NO2 and B is a group represented by formula (R=A), a group represented by formula III [X is -N=N-, -N(O)N-, -C(O)O- or -O(O)C-] or a group represented by formula IV (R' is 1-12C alkyl)}.
EXAMPLE: dl/3-phenylbutyrate (4'-methoxyphenylazo)phenyl-4.
USE: This new material is useful as a mixing component or liquid crystal coloring matter of a liquid crystal mixture used in a display of data based on a chiral or racemic liquid crystal mixture, especially, a chiral nematic or smectic phase.
PREPARATION: Pref., an acid represented by formula V such as curcumic acid or its acid chloride and phenol represented by formula VI are esterified in an inert solvent in the presence of a known reaction catalyst and a condensing agent to obtain the compd. represented by formula I.
