PURPOSE: To produce a new compound useful for a liquid crystal material capable of remarkably improving a problem about crystal deposition in a range of low temperatures by admixing therein without reducing, e.g. the electro-optic properties such as threshold voltage.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture of two or more kinds of compounds respectively represented by formula I [R1 is an alkyl or an alkenyl; X1 to X4 are each H or D ad one or more of them are D; Y1 and Y2 are each H or F; Z is F, Cl, cyano, R2 (R2 is an alkyl or an alkenyl), OR2, CF3, OCF3, OCF2H, OCN, OCH2CF3 or a cyclohexane ring. cyclohexane ring has a trans form], and (i) different from each other in the number of D in X1 to X4 or the substituted position and (ii) same in all of R1, Y1, Y2 and Z. The compound of formula I can be synthesized, e.g. by using a new deuterium-substituted 4-(phenyl- substituted) cyclohexanone derivative represented by formula II (Z' is H, F, Cl, R2, OR2, OCF3, OCH2ph, etc.) as an intermediate.
