Abstract:

NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I (R1 is 3-20C alkyl; R2 is 1-20C alkyl or 2-20C alkoxyalkyl; X is O, COO or OCO; Ar is expressed by formula II-formula V; Y is (CH2)m or CH=CH-(CH2)m; (l) and (s) are 0 or 1; (m) is 0-10; (n) is 0-8; * is asymmetric C).

EXAMPLE: A (-)-2-[4-(3-Butoxy-4,4,4-trifluoro-1-butyl)phenyl]-5-decyloxypyrimidine.

USE: Useful as a liquid crystalline element. Useful as a ferroelectric liquid crystalline material exhibiting a ferroelectric liquid crystalline phase in a temperature region near room temperature, having sufficient spontaneous polarization and capable of quick response.

PREPARATION: Alcohol expressed by formula VI and a carboxylic acid expressed by the formula R2COR' (R' is OH, OCOR2 or halogen) are reacted in the presence of a catalyst (e.g. dimethylaminopyridine) and in a solvent such as THF, as necessary, at a temp. from -30°C to 100°C to afford the compound expressed by formula I.
