To produce a photocatalyst having excellent decomposition capacity with respect to an organic compound, and to provide a method for manufacturing the same.
The photocatalyst 3 is supported on a substrate to constitute a photocatalyst element 1. The photocatalyst 3 is constituted of a sintered body of a photocatalyst material based on titanium oxide and has a porous structure. Titanium oxide is mainly constituted of titanium dioxide and the crystal structure thereof is preferably an anatase type. The void ratio of the photocatalyst 3 is preferably 1-50% and the surface roughness Ra of the light receiving surface thereof is preferably 5 nm-10 μm. It is preferable to add an inorganic sensitizer, a sintering auxiliary agent and a porosity forming organic substance to the photocatalyst material constituting the photocatalyst 3 and, at the time of sintering, sintering temperature is preferably set to 900°C or lower.
