Title:
PHOTOCATALYTIC HYDROPHILIC COATING COMPOSITION
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPH09227805
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:

To render the surface of a base material hydrophilic and maintain the hydrophilicity even when light is cut off by applying and fixing a coating composition consisting of a photocatalytic titanium oxide and amorphous alumina or its precursor on the surface of a base material and then irradiating the coated surface with ultraviolet rays.

This photocatalytic titanium oxide is an oxide which can form conduction electrons and holes when irradiated with light (excitation light) having higher energy than the energy gap between the conduction band and the valence band of the oxide crystal, for example, anatase-type titanium dioxide, rutile-type titanium dioxide and tin oxide. Examples of light source used for light excitation include a fluorescent lamp, an incandescent lamp and a mercury lamp. An irradiance of at least 0.1mW/cm2 is desirable to render the surface of a base material highly hydrophilic. Examples of amorphous alumina precursor used include an aluminum alkoxide and an aluminum chelate. A solvent comprising e.g. water or ethanol is used in an amount at least 10 times that of the film-forming element. A measure of high hydrophilicity is 10 degree or less in terms of an angle of contact with water.
