PURPOSE: To detect light securely in various directions by providing an optical fiber bending part at some part of an optical fiber core.
CONSTITUTION: A photodetector 10 consists of an optical fiber bending part 14 provided atop of the optical fiber 12. The optical fiber bending part consists of a bare optical fiber formed of only a core and a cladding while the sheath 12a of the core 12 is removed, but a transparent coating may be provided thereupon. When the optical fiber is bent, light is incident in directions other than the radius direction of the bending because of diffusion. The radius R of curvature of the optical fiber bending part 14 is a radius R0 of curvature for obtaining the maximum amount of light condensation. Then, light condensed at the bending part 14 is passed through the optical fiber core 12 and converted into an electric signal by a photomultiplier 16. Thus, light for various direction is detected securely.
