Abstract:

To provide a photopolymerizable composition capable of imparting properties such as water repellency, weather resistance, flame retardance and high photopolymerization rate and useful for coating material, etc., for optical fibers.

The photopolymerizable composition is obtained by combining a photopolymerizable monomer or oligomer with a water-repellent condensed polycyclic compound. The condensed polycyclic compound may be a compound having a fluorine atom (e.g. fluorinated pitch) and the photopolymerizable monomer or oligomer is composed of a photopolymerizable resin [e.g. urethane (meth)acrylate] or the like having a nitrogen atom to which hydrogen atom(s) is bonded, e.g. an urethane bond, an amide bond or an urea bond. The ratio of the amount of the condensed polycyclic compound to total amount of the condensed polycyclic compound and the photopolymerizable monomer or oligomer is preferably about 1-20 wt.%.
