PURPOSE: To house many character cabinets in a fixed character shelf of a character cabinet unit thereby to improve the efficiency by providing a main unit and the character cabinet unit and setting the height of the character cabinet unit freely irrespective of the height of the main unit.

CONSTITUTION: This phototypesetting machine is provided with a main unit 2 and a character cabinet unit 4. A character cabinet table 6 and a biaxial feeding device 8 and the like are accommodated in the main unit 2. There are a fixed character cabinet shelf 22, a moving character cabinet 24 etc. housed in the character cabinet unit 4. The height of the character cabinet unit 4 can be set freely irrespective of the height of the main unit 2. Therefore, the main unit 2 is set low, while the character cabinet unit 4 is rendered high. As a result, it becomes possible to store many character cabinets 28 in the fixed character cabinet shelf 22 of the character cabinet unit 4. The operator is not required to change the character cabinets 28, whereby the efficiency is improved.
