SOLUTION: A range separation circuit 147 separates a video signal 139 of one picture generated from a solid-state image pickup device 121 of the picture data forming device 127 into main information M149 suitable for forming a complete picture and highlight information H 157 with a range higher than above, and an image recording memory 125 stores them in cross-reference with each other. A main information processing circuit 153 applies gradation conversion and compression to the main information M. A highlight information processing circuit 155 applies the gradation conversion and compression to the highlight information H as required. A picture reproduction device reads the main information M and the highlight information H in cross-reference with each other as one picture from the image recording memory 125, expands the both on a common axis Q and synthesizes them.
