This device is provided with an observation optical system having positive refractive power as a whole in order to observe a display picture on a picture display element 3; the observation optical system is provided with a relay optical system forming a relay picture 6, and an ocular optical system forming the exit pupil 2 in order to guide the image to an observer; and the relay optical system is provided with a prism member 5. Furthermore, the prism member 5 is provided with an incident surface 11, at least one reflection surface 12 or 13, and an exiting surface 14, and the reflection surface is constituted of rotationally asymmetric surface shape to compensate aberration where power is generated in luminous flux by eccentricity, and the ocular optical system is constituted of a concave mirror 4 having the rotationally asymmetric surface shape compensating aberration where the power is generated in the luminous flux by eccentricity.
