An area to be read by main scanning is arbitrarily designated to a picture read by a pre-scanning operation of a picture reading part 10 displayed on a display part 23, and information related with a display size at the time of displaying the picture read by the main scanning on the display part 23 is set by a controlling part 22. Then, a CPU 21 decides a display magnification so that all the pictures in the area whose range is designated can be displayed in a fetched picture display area 65 of a picture fetching screen 60 displayed on the display part 23 regardless of the set display size. When the main scanning is executed by the picture reading part 10, the pictures read in the fetched picture display area 65 are successively displayed according to the decided display magnification.
