To obtain a pitch fiber bundle for carbon fiber having low fineness and a pitch-based carbon fiber bundle, especially suitable for production of carbon fiber woven fabrics and a carbon fiber prepreg having a low weight per unit area, and provide a method for producing the pitch-based carbon fiber having low fineness at a low cost and in improved productivity in comparison with conventional methods.
Plural pitch fibers are divided into two or more bundles and interlacing by air flow is applied to the each bundle to provide a first fiber bundle, and plurality of the first fiber bundles are joined and interlacing by air flow is applied to the joined pitch fiber bundle to provide a second fiber bundle and the pitch fiber is taken off from the second fiber bundle. Thereby, since the same productivity as that of a carbon fiber having multi-fineness is kept in each step of spinning, infusibilization, carbonization, and the like, production of a carbon fiber having low fineness is finally made possible, and the carbon fiber having low fineness can industrially and inexpensively be produced in good productivity.
