To realize a PDP (plasma display panel) which comes with high definition and high luminance display performance and also can save on power consumption.
In a PDP manufacturing method of the present invention, a protective layer is formed on a transported substrate by evaporating a raw material by electron beams, characterized in that an angle α formed, in a plane including a line in the substrate transport direction and a perpendicular line from the evaporation point of the raw material by electron beams to the substrate surface, by the perpendicular line and a line running from the evaporation point to a protective film formation terminated point on the downstream side of the substrate transport direction is 60° or more, and evaporation in the perpendicular direction is included in a direction incident on the substrate on which the raw material is evaporated, and that the protective film is formed with metal oxide consisting of magnesium oxide and calcium oxide, and in X-ray diffraction analysis on the protective film surface, a peak exists between a diffraction angle at which a peak of crystal orientation face (111) of magnesium oxide occurs and a diffraction angle at which a peak of calcium oxide in the same orientation as the former peak occurs, the calcium concentration of the protective film being 3 to 15 atom%, both ends inclusive.
