To obtain a polarizing plate which is not a polarizing plate having a single polarization direction but has a polarization characteristic not possible with the conventional polarizing plates by constituting the polarizing plate by using a specific liquid crystal layer and specifying an orientation treatment direction to a direction having concentric directivity.
The liquid crystal layer 5 of the polarizing plate is composed of nematic liquid crystals based on horizontal orientation and dichromatic dyestuff 4. A material by which the liquid crystal molecules 3 are arranged parallel with the orientation treatment direction is used as the oriented film to be formed on the substrate 1. In addition, the orientation treatment direction is the direction having the concentric directivity. The major axes of the liquid crystal molecules 3 and the dichromatic dyestuff 4 are arrayed along the concentric orientation treatment direction by using the combination of such liquid crystal layer 5 with the oriented film. Then, an absorption axis direction 2 is set at the concentric direction and the transmission axis direction is set at the radial direction perpendicular to the absorption axis direction 2. The polarization characteristic point symmetrical with a central axis is thus obtd.
