PURPOSE: To produce a polyacrylic acid composite having a high water absorption capacity and to provide a process for producing this composite industrially advantageously without passing through the state of hydrogel.

CONSTITUTION: This polyacrylic acid composite comprising a cross-linked polyacrylic acid and inorg. particles which cause alkali ions to be dissolved out when in contact with water is obtd. by polymerizing acrylic acid and a cross-linker therefor in a nonaq. solvent capable of dissolving acrylic acid but substantially incapable of dissolving polyacrylic acid in the presence of the inorg. particles.
