A polycarboxylic acid of the formula [R1 is H or a (branched) 1-5C alkyl; R2 is a (branched) 1-5C alkyl; X is a (branched) 3-13C alkylene]. The compound of the formula is obtained by reacting a 4-14C cycloalkanone (for example, cyclohexanone) with an aqueous hydrogen peroxide solution in an alcohol of the formula: R1OH [R1 is a (branched) 1-5C alkyl] (for example, anhydrous methanol), reacting the obtained reaction product with an unsaturated carboxylic acid ester compound of the formula: R2-CH=CH-COOR3 [R3 is a (branched) 1-5C alkyl] (for example, methyl crotonate) and, if necessary, subsequently hydrolyzing the reaction product.
