PURPOSE: To produce a polyether-polyol consisting essentially of oxytetramethylene units, by polymerizing tetrahydrofuran by using a specified catalyst system.
CONSTITUTION: Use is made of a catalyst system comprising (A) an ether complex of a Lewis acid (e.g., boron trifluoride diethyl etherate), (B) an epihalohydrin (e.g., epichlorohydrin) and (C) a compound having 2W10 hydroxyl groups in the molecule (e.g., ethylene glycol). Namely, tetrahydrofuran is polymerized in the presence of the above-mentioned catalyst system (component B is used in a molar ratio of below 0.05 with respect to tetrahydrofuran) to obtain a polyether- polyol which contains at least 60wt% oxytetramethylene unit, and in which the number of halogens other than that contained in a group of formulaI(wherein R1 and R2 are each H or alkyl, and X is a halogen) is below N defined by formula II, wherein f is the functionality (as hydroxyl group) of a polymer, and S is the number of the groups of formulaIper one polymer molecule.
