Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide the compound useful as an intermediate for the synthesis of polyhydroxypyrrolidine derivatives which are useful as medicines.

CONSTITUTION: The compound of formula I (PWP is 4-methoxyphenyl). The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting 2,3-dibromopropionyl chloride of formula II with 4-methoxyphenol and (S)-1-methylbenzylamine in a solvent (e.g. methylene chloride) at 0°C to room temperature. The compound of formula I can be reacted with vinylene carbonate and subsequently reduced to easily produce a polyhydroxypyrrolidine compound in a good stereo-specific state. The polyhydroxypyrrolidine derivative has a glyoxidase-inhibiting action and is useful as a therapeutic medicine for AIDS.
