To provide a polymer emulsion excellent in polymerization stability and storage stability and excellent in various physical properties such as weatherability and water resistance when used for a water-based coating material, and to provide a water-based coating material containing the polymer emulsion.
The polymer emulsion is obtained by polymerizing a monomer (a) containing an acidic group-containing ethylenically unsaturated monomer (a1) without adjusting the pH, adjusting an emulsion containing the obtained polymer (X) to the pH of 6 to 11, and then polymerizing the following monomer (b) by 1 to 10 mass% with respect to 100 mass% of the total amount of the monomer (a) and the monomer (b) in the presence of the emulsion. The water-based coating material contains the polymer emulsion. The monomer (b) contains a specific ethylenically unsaturated monomer (b1) having a piperidyl group in the molecule, by 6 to 60 mass% with respect to the entire amount of the monomer (b).
