PURPOSE: To obtain a polymer emulsion containing a polymer having a specific particle diameter distribution as the disperse phase, free from coagulation even by increasing solid concentration, having high stability in polymerization and storage, keeping low-viscosity characteristics and having easy handleability and good applicability and workability.
CONSTITUTION: This polymer emulsion satisfies the following conditions. The weight-average particle diameter (Dw) of the polymer particles is in the range of 0.05-2μm: the ratio of the large polymer particles larger than l.3×Dw is ≤5wt.% of the total polymer particles: the ratio of the small polymer particles smaller than 0.8×Dw is 2-20wt.% of the total polymer particles. The polymer emulsion can be produced by adding 1-49 pts.wt. of a polymerizable monomer containing ≥5wt.% of a crosslinkable monomer to an aqueous dispersion containing 1 pt.wt. of seed polymer particles and polymerizing the polymerizable monomer in a state absorbed in the seed polymer particles.
