Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a polymer which exhibits a liq. crystalline phase, has repeating units represented by a specific formula, exhibits a wide mesophase range, birefringence variable in wide limits, and positive and negative diamagnetic anisotropies, and is easily processible and highly chemically stable.
CONSTITUTION: This polymer, exhibiting a liq. crystalline phase and having mesogenic groups bonded to repeating units, has repeating units represented by formula I [wherein (n) is 3-2; X is O, S, OCO, or SO2; and M is a mesogenic group represented by formula II or III (wherein Q is H or a 1-5C alkyl; X1 to X5 are each H or a 1-20C alkyl provided at least two of them are not H; and one CH2 may be substd. by O, S, COO, or SO2)], exhibits a wide mesophase range, birefringence variable in wide limits, and positive and negative diamagnetic anisotropies, is easily processible, and can give an anisotropic article having a desired shape.
