PURPOSE: To provide a polymer having a main chain composed of a chemically stable hydrocarbon chain, having reactive phenolic hydroxyl group at the terminal or on side chain and useful e.g. as an agent for improving compatibility and adhesivity between a polymer and a polyolefin by adding to a resin.
CONSTITUTION: The objective polymer has a main chain composed of a saturated or mostly saturated hydrocarbon chain (e.g. hydrogenated polybutadiene), a number-average molecular weight of 500W20,000 and phenolic hydroxy groups of formula (the hydrogen on the benzene ring may be substituted with alkyl group) bonded to a terminal or side chain directly or via an ester bond or ether bond. The average number of the phenolic hydroxyl groups is 1W5. The polymer can be produced e.g. by carrying out ester interchange reaction of a hydrogenated polybutadiene having alcoholic hydroxyl group at the terminal with methyl ester of hydroxybenzoic acid, thereby phenolating the polymer.
