PURPOSE: To obtain a low-halogen ethylene polymer freed from a need of separating catalyst residues, by polymerizing ethylene in the presence of a catalyst comprising a specified solid catalytic component and a specified organoaluminum compound.
CONSTITUTION: A solid catalytic component (A) is obtained by contacting 2W 100mol of a titanium tetrahalide at 20W140°C for 5minW2hr with a mixture obtained by contacting 1mol of magnesium orthosilicate, average diameter 0.5W 5μ, 0.2W1.6mol of an Si compound of formulaI, wherein R1 is H, a 1W10C alkyl or a phenyl, X is a halogen and n is 1W3, and 1W20mol of an alcohol of formula II, wherein R2 is a 1W10C alkyl, at 20W90°C for 5minW2hr. Then, ethylene alone or together with 3C or higher olefins is polymerized at a pressure of 1W80kg/cm2 and a temperature of 30W100°C, in the presence of a catalyst obtained from component A and 1W1,500mg, per g Ti atom, of an organoaluminum compound of formula III, wherein R3 is a 1W6C alkyl.
