Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide new polyolefin gel fibers which give polyolefin fibers consisting of respectively specified polyolefins and swelling solvents and having high tenacity, extremely high modulus, excellent toughness, dimensional stability, water-soluble stability or the like.
CONSTITUTION: This fiber comprises (A) 4-20 wt.% polyolefin selected from solid polyethylene of 500,000 weight average molecular weight and solid polypropylene of 750,000 weight average molecular weight and (B) 80-96 wt.% swelling solvent compatible with high boiling point hydrocarbons and having not higher than 50°C boiling point under atmospheric pressure. It is produced preferably by dissolving the component A in a hydrocarbon, extruding from holes to form a hydrocarbon-containing gel of indefinite length and extracting the gel by the component B to substitute the hydrocarbon in the gel with the component B. As for the component B, methylene chloride or trichlorotrifluoro ethane is preferably used.
