PURPOSE: To obtain a polyphenylmethylene-polycyanamide compound useful as an intermediate for heat-resistant polymers, by reacting a specified polyphenylmethylene-polyamine compound with a cyanogen halide.
CONSTITUTION: A polyphenylmethylene-polyamine compound of formula II, wherein n is 0W50 is reacted with a cyanogen halide of the formula, XCN, e.g., cyanogen bromide or cyanogen chloride, in a molar ratio of 1:1W1:10, with the aid of a reaction solvent such as a dipolar solvent, e.g. alcohol or ether, or a mixed solvent system consisting of the dipolar solvent and water. The reaction temperature is preferably 20°C or below, though it is not specified. The obtained reaction product is a polyphenylmethylene-polycyanamide compound of formula I , wherein n is 0W50, and can be used as a starting material for producing polymers having excellent heat resistance.
