PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a PVA-based paper coating agent excellent in water resistance, etc., capable of uniformly applying to a surface to be applied without impairing coating property even when applied in a region having high shear rate and excellent in high speed coating property.
SOLUTION: This paper coating agent consists mainly of a polyvinyl alcohol obtained by saponifying an aliphatic polyvinyl ester obtained by polymerizing an aliphatic vinyl ester at a reaction temperature higher by 2-80°C than a boiling point of reaction solution under atmospheric pressure while keeping the pressure in a polymerizer in a pressure higher than atmospheric pressure by a vapor of unreacted aliphatic vinyl ester in the polyerizer or a medium for polymerization or non-condensable gas introduced from the outside of the polymerizer in polymerization of the aliphatic vinyl ester.
