Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain the subject polymer excellent in water resistance and useful as a fiber, a film, a pipe, a sizing agent for fibers, a paper coating agent, an adhesive, etc., by carrying out a radical copolymerization between a vinyl fatty acid ester and a specified monomer and subsequently saponifying the resultant copolymer using an alkaline catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A vinyl fatty acid ester (preferably vinyl acetate) is subjected to radical copolymerization with an acetal group-containing monomer [e.g. N-2,2-dimethoxyethyl(meth)acrylamide] of formula I ((n) is 0-8; R1 is H or methyl; R2 is H or 1-4C alkyl; R3 and R4 are H or 1-8C alkyl) and the resultant copolymer is subsequently saponified using an alkaline catalyst (e.g. sodium hydroxide) to obtain the objective polymer containing 0.1-50mol%, preferably 0.5-12mol% structural unit of formula II and having >=50mol%, peferably >=70mol% saponification degree and 50-4000 polymerization degree.
