To make portable electronic equipment which can be connected to master equipment and can be used singly as slave equipment usable as a remote control device and, at the same time, to enable visually-handicapped users to aurally distinguish the information on the remote control of the equipment.
Portable electronic equipment down-loads a program for remote control and a frequency dividing program in the program memory 41 of the equipment from a CD-ROM which is a recording medium and, in addition, voice data for remote control in a nonvolatile memory 46. Then the equipment divides the frequency of voice data for remote control correspondingly to the operational item when the equipment is utilized as a remote control device and causes a loudspeaker 47c to produce a voice which enables listeners to recognize the operational item.
