The handwriting input surface 35 operates in combination with handwritten character recognition software stored in the electronic device of the main body part 13 of the telephone. This software interprets the movement when the path corresponding to the characters, numbers, or symbols on the handwriting input surface 35 is traced with the stylus or finger of the user and operates to input, for example, alphanumeric data or executes a specific command for redialing.
