To provide a powder fire extinguisher composition, which can be used particularly as an early fire extinction means for extinguishing a fire occurring from frying oil in a house by the combined action of suffocation, using carbon dioxide gas produced by heat decomposition as well as bubbles containing the carbon dioxide gas, and the lowering of the oil temperature by water, and a fire extinguishing method.
This powder fire extinguisher composition has as its effective component a mixture containing a salt of a higher fatty acid, a carbonate producing carbon dioxide gas on being thermally decomposed, and water. In this case, the overall surface of a fired oil surface is covered with bubbles of flame-retardant, high-viscosity films containing steam and bubbles of carbon dioxide gas and formed from the salt of the higher fatty acid and oil components and with the carbon dioxide gas itself having fire extinguishing performance and produced in a large amount by thermal decomposition of the carbonate, to produce a 'suffocated' state in which the supply of oxygen (air) to the surface of frying oil is shut off; further, the action of water to lower the oil temperature is made to work in combination.
