The fixing apparatus for xerographic printing includes a fixing roller 12 with two parallel lamps, that is, heating elements 20, 22 therein. At power-up, power is applied to the respective lamps 20, 22 in a stair-step style in which incremental increases in applied power for the respective lamps 20, 22 are staggered in time. The incremental increases are made by adding half- cycles to an alternating current applied to the respective lamps 20, 22.
