PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To charge a secondary battery quickly without missing any safety through a constant-current intermittent charging, by setting a longer predetermined dead time than the intermittent on-time of the constant-current intermittent charging to a voltage sensing performed in a protection circuit for inhibiting the charging when the terminal voltage of the secondary battery exceeds a charge inhibiting voltage.
SOLUTION: In a voltage sensing circuit 14 of a protection circuit 12 of a battery pack 10, a dead-time setting circuit 15 is provided to set this dead time to a longer time than the intermittent on-time of a constant-current intermittent charging. Further, in the initial term of the charging, a continuous constant-current charging is performed by a control circuit 27 of a charger 20 via a constant-current circuit 22 and a switching circuit 23. Then, when the sensed terminal voltage of a secondary battery 11 by a voltage sensing circuit 24 exceeds a reference operation voltage, shifting the continuous constant-current charging to the constant-current intermittent charging, the switching circuit 23 is switched on or off every predetermined time by a timer 28. Hereupon, even in the case that the terminal voltage of the secondary battery 11 is increased to exceed a charge inhibiting voltage, when the exceeding time is shorter than the dead time, the constant-current intermittent charging is continued to perform a quick charging.
