To obtain the subject compound efficiently and in a good yield by reacting an α,β-unsaturated aldehyde with an alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst, hydrolyzing the reaction product and then hydrogenating.
This method for producing 3-alkoxyalkanol is provided by reacting (A) an α,β-unsaturated aldehyde with (B) an alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst (preferably a strongly acidic ion exchange resin), to obtain (C) a mixture of 1,3-alkoxyalkane and 3-alokoxyalkanal. Further, by hydrolyzing the mixture, most of the mixture is converted into the 3-alkoxyalkanol, and then by hydrogenating it, the 3-alkoxyalkanol is obtained. Further, the amount of the acid catalyst to be used is preferably 0.0001-10 equivalent as the acid based on the component A. Also, the use amount of the components A and B is preferably 1-15 molar ratio of the component B/component A.
