Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for drugs in high yield, by hydrogenating p-isobutylacetophenone in the presence of a ruthenium catalyst by the use of an ether compound or a saturated hydrocarbon as a solvent.
CONSTITUTION: p-Isobutylacetophenone shown by the formula I is reduced under heating (preferably at 60W90°C) in a hydrogen flow in an ether compound such as dioxane, tetrahydrofuran, cyclohexane, n-hexane, or a saturated hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of a ruthenium catalyst (preferably one obtained by supporting ruthenium on alumina, silica, or carbon) to give a compound shown by the formula II.
