PURPOSE: To prepare 1,1,3,4,4,6-hexamethyl-1,2,3,4tetrahydronaphthalene useful as an intermediate of a musk perfume by reacting p-cymol with a specified hexene isomer in the presence of a catalytic amt. of an aluminum halide and a catalytic amt. of a triphenylmethyl compd.
CONSTITUTION: Para-cymol, of formula I is reacted with a hexene of formula II, III or IV to obtain the objective 1,1,3,4,4,6hexamethyl-1, 2, 3, 4- tetrahydronaphthalene of formula V. At this time, the reaction is carried out in the presence of a catalytic amt. of an aluminum halide such as anhydrous aluminum trichloride and a catalytic amt. of a triphenylmethyl compd. of formula VI (R1-R3 are each H, alkyl, nitro or halogen; and X is H or halogen), e.g. triphenylmethyl chloride. The pref. molar ratio between the aluminum halicle and p-cymol is 0.05:1 to 1:1 and that between the triphenylmethyl compd. and p-cymol is about (0.05-0.02):1.
