PURPOSE: To obtain 1,4-butanediol quatitatively using a small amount of methanol, by carrying out the methanolysis of a diol ester by countercurrent catalytic process while continuously supplying a solution of a basic catalyst dissolved in a resulting reaction solution.
CONSTITUTION: In ester interchange reaction of 1,4-diacetoxybutane and/or 1,4- diacetoxybutene (diol ester) with methanol, a countercurrent catalytic reaction is carried out by supplying a sloution, which is obtained by dissolving a basic catalyst in a part of a resulting reaction solution containing formed diol, from the upper part of a reactor continously, and supplying methanol from the lower part and a diol ester from the upper part thereof, to obtain the title diol from the lower part and an azeotropic mixture of by-produced methyl acetate and methanol from the upper part. The mixture is efficently hydrolyzed in the presence of an acidic cation, the hydrolyzate is distilled, and the vapor phase and methanol are recycled to the hydrolysis stage and the ester interchange stage, respectively
