Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for agricultural chemicals or medicines, readily, by the reaction of benzoic acid with bromine, using water or sulfuric acid as a reaction solvent.
CONSTITUTION: Benzoic acid is reacted with bromine in water or sulfuric acid as a reaction solvent, in the presence of nitric and sulfuric acids to give 3-bromobenzoic acid. The use of water or a reaction reagent sulfuric acid as a solvent and absence of organic solvents, e.g. acetic acid, facilitate the post-treatment of the reaction product and treatment of the waste water.
