Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide a method for preparing 3-mercaptopropionic acid by which the 3-mercaptopropionic acid can more efficiently be produced at a lower reaction temperature in a time shorter than those of a conventional method.
CONSTITUTION: Acrylonitrile in a molar excessive amount is reacted with an alkaline hydrosulfide (preferably sodium hydrosulfide), preferably in amounts of 2 mol former and 1 mol latter at a temperature of 35-45°C, to produce thiodipropionitrile in a nearly quantitative yield, which is then reacted with the alkaline hydrosulfide in the presence of a base, preferably potassium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide or triethanolamine to provide 3-mercaptopropionitrile. The resultant 3-mercaptopropionitrile is further acidified with a strong acid such as hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid to afford 3-mercaptopropionic acid. The 3-mercaptopropionitrile and 3-mercaptopropionic acid without containing the dithiodipropionitrile and dithiopropionic acid as impurities can be produced in high yield by the method.
