PURPOSE: To obtain acetic anhydride from inexpensive raw materials by bringing CO-contg. gas and methyl formate into reaction in the presence a rhodium catalyst, two kinds of iodine-contg. accelerators varying in the timing for addition and an N-substd. cyclic amide solvent.
CONSTITUTION: The gas contg. CO is brought into reaction with the methyl formate under a pressure of ≥1 MPa in the presence of (A) the rhodium based catalyst (e.g.; RhCl3.3H2O, etc.), (B) the solvent consisting of the N-substd. cyclic amide solvent (more adequately N-methyl pyrrolidone etc.) and (C) the ionic iodine-contg. accelerator (more adequately LiI, NaI, etc.) to be added in the initial period of the reaction. Further, the reaction is executed by adding (D) the covalent iodine-contg. accelerator (more adequately CH3I, molecular iodine, etc.) to the reaction system during reaction, for example, after b hours from the reaction starting, by which the acetic anhydride is obtd. The reaction temp. is adequately 150 to 210°C.
