PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as medicines having anti-inflammatory and analgesic action in high yield, by reacting α-(6-methoxy-2-naphthyl) ethyl alcohol with carbon monoxide and water in the presence of a Pd catalyst and an acidic compound.
CONSTITUTION: α-(6-Methoxy-2-naphthyl)ethyl alcohol of formula I is reacted with carbon monoxide and water in the presence of a Pd catalyst containing a halogen group atom, a trivalent phosphorus compound and π-allyl group, etc. as a ligand, and consisting of a Pd complex containing 0-Wbivalent Pd and an acidic compound, e.g. an inorganic acid, organic acid, preferably hydrogen halide, at 10W180°C, preferably 70W150°C under ≥10kg/cm2, preferably 20W150kg/cm2 pressure to give the aimed compound of formula II. The amount of the catalyst to be used is suitably 10-3W10-1moles, based on one mole compound of formula I , Pd complex. The molar amount of the acidic compound to be used is preferably 10W40times based on one mole Pd atom.
