PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as a synthetic intermediate of pyrimidine compounds, easily, economically, in high yield, by reacting formylurea or formylthiourea with a cyanoacetic acid ester in the presence of a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Formylurea or formylthiourea and a cyanoacetic acid ester of formula NCCH2COOR (R is lower alkyl) are subjected to the dehydration reaction by heating in a solvent such as benzene, toluene, etc. in the presence of a catalyst such as propylamine, cycloaliphatic amine, piperidiene, etc. to obtain the objective compound of formula (X is O or S). The amount of the catalyst is 0.1W0.5mol equivalent based on the raw material. The addition of an acid such as sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, formic acid, etc. to the system further improves the effect.
