PURPOSE: To obtain the titled (substituted) compound useful as a raw material for medicines and agricultural chemicals in high yield, by catalytically reducing a (substituted) nitrophenyl ketone in the presence of a Raney-nickel catalyst and a cyano compound efficiently under pressure of hydrogen.
CONSTITUTION: A nitrophenyl ketone which may be substituted, e.g. m-nitroacetophenone, is catalytically reduced preferably in a solvent, e.g. methanol, in the presence of a Raney-nickel catalyst and a cyano compound at 50W150°C, industrially and advantageously 70W120°C under 2W100kg/cm2, preferably 5W 50kg/cm2 H2 pressure to afford the aimed aminophenyl ketone which may be substituted, e.g. m-aminoacetophenone. An inorganic or organic cyano compound is used as the cyano compound, and for example dicyandiamide, calcium cyanamide, dicyanoethane, diaminomaleonitrile, 4-cyanopyridine, etc. are used.
