PURPOSE: To obtain an aq. bataine soln. in high yield and purity in a simple manner by quaternizing a tertiary amine continuously in two or three stirred tanks arranged in a cascade.
CONSTITUTION: To prepare an aq. soln. of bataine having formula II by the reaction of a tertiary amine (A) represented by the formula; R1-NR2R3 [R1 is a 6-22C alkyl, R1CONH(CH2)z (R1 is a 6-22C alkyl; (z) is 2-4); R2 and R3 are each a 1-4C alkyl, (CH2)m-OH- ((m) is 1-3)] with an ω-halocarboxylic acid (B) represented by formula I (X is a halogen; (y) is 1-3) and the reaction of the amine with an alkali metal hydroxide (C) in an aq. phase, wherein 1-1.3 mole of B per 1 mole of A and 0.80-0.98 mole of C per 1 mole of B are supplied and bataine pigment is supplied in an amount of 20-50 wt.%, and they are reacted in such a way that A remaining at 60-100°C is 2-15 mol.% of the supplied amount. The formed soln. in a first tank and C in 5% excess of the stoichiometric amount are supplied into a second tank equipped with a stirrer, and reacted to such an extent that the remainder of A becomes ≤2 mol.% of the supplied amount.
