PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for medicines, etc. with a small amount of a specific catalyst industrially and advantageously in high yield, by reacting an aryl halide with a malonitrile compound in the presence of the specific catalyst, a basic condensing agent and solvent.
CONSTITUTION: An aryl halide of formula I (Ar is aryl or arylene; X is halogen; Y is -O-, -S- or alkylene; m is 1 or 2; n is 0 or 1) is reacted with a malonitrile compound of formula II (R1 is H, alkyl or aryl) in the presence of a catalyst, basic condensing agent, e.g. Na or K, and solvent, e.g. THF or DMF. In the process, a bivalent palladium catalyst of formula III (Q is nitrile, π-allyl, 1,5- diene, etc.; X* is halogen, etc.; a and b are 1 or 2) and a ligand compound of formula IV (X is phosphorus, arsenic, etc.; R3, R4 and R5 are alkyl, alkenyl, etc.) are used as the catalyst to give the aimed aryl-substituted malonitrile of formula V.
