PURPOSE: To obtain the titled copolymer in a high polymer suspension concentration useful as a molding material and so on by polymerizing CO and an unsaturated compound by a catalyst system comprising a Pd cation source or the like and an anion source in the presence of a diluent and a nonionic surfactant.
CONSTITUTION: Carbon monoxide and one or more ethylenically unsaturated compound (e.g. ethene or the like) are polymerized in the presence of a catalyst system consisting essentially of a source of cations of one or more group VIII metals (e.g. palladium or the like) of the periodic table and a source of anions (e.g. trifluoroacetic acid or the like) and in the further presence of a diluent in which the copolymers formed are insoluble (e.g. methanol or the like), an alkoxylate of a monohydric alcohol and a minor amount of one or more of nonionic surfactants such as a polymer of a vinyl amide monomer or the like [e.g. poly(vinylpyrrolidine) or the like], whereby agglomeration of a copolymer is delayed to obtain a copolymer of carbon monoxide and the ethylenically unsaturated compound(s) in a higher copolymer suspension concentration.
