PURPOSE: To easily obtain at a low cost a high-performance ion-exchange fiber with excellent ion-exchange rate, by the introduction of a functional group with an ion-exchange function to a specified active carbon fiber obtd. from a coal depolymerization product.
CONSTITUTION: A coal is depolymerized in a hydrocarbon solvent under hydrogen pressure and an undissolved residue is removed, and then the hydrocarbon solvent is distilled off. An ion-exchange function is given to an active carbon fiber of surface area 100W700m2/g obtd. from the coal depolymerization product thus obtd. of softening pt. 160W250°C and O/C atomic ratio ≤0.07. Any coals except anthracite may be used as a raw coal. The raw fiber is rendered infusible by heating in an atmosphere contg. oxygen. Then an ion-exchange fiber is obtd. by introducing a functional group with an ion-exchange function after an active carbon fiber of large surface area of 100W700m2/g is prepd. by activating the infusible fiber in an inert gas atmosphere.
