Abstract:

PURPOSE: To retain high selectivity, improve the conversion and space time yield and obtain a ketone, by dehydrogenating a secondary alcohol in the presence of a Raney nickel catalyst under specific reaction conditions.

CONSTITUTION: A secondary alcohol, preferably secondary butanol is dehydrogenated in the presence of a Raney nickel catalyst, suspended in a paraffinic and naphthenic saturated hydrocarbon having ≥200°C boiling point or a mixture thereof, and developed at 160W190°C, preferably 160W180°C under 2W8atm, preferably 4W8atm pressure to give the aimed ketone, e.g. methyl ethyl ketone.
