PURPOSE: To obtain a high purity dinuclear manganese (III) complex in a short reaction time and a high yield by allowing a manganese (III) salt to react with a ligand L-contg. compd. in a nonaq. solvent.
CONSTITUTION: A manganese (III) salt is allowed to react with an equiv. amt. or more of a ligand L-contg. compd. (L is a ligand which is an org. molecule contg. three or more nitrogen atoms which coordinate to a manganese center) in a nonaq. solvent, preferably acetonitrile contg. <0.5 wt.% water in the presence of a mineral acid having a pLa of <0 to obtain the objective dinuclear manganese complex of the formula (wherein Mn is manganese in the III or IV oxidation state; each X is H2O, O2-, SH-, etc.; Z is the charge of the complex and is an integer which may be positive or negative; Y is a mono- or multivalent counter ion leading to charge neutrality, which is dependent upon the charge Z of the complex; and q=Z/[charge Y]) e.g. [Mn2III(μ-O)1(μ- OAC)2(1,4,7-Me3TACN)2](PF6)2.H2O. The complex may be oxidized with an oxidizing agent if necessary.
