To provide a preparation method for a carbon material and a graphite material which can prevent fluxing, fusing each of particles and blowing at carbonization and graphitization of a mesophase-containing pitch, and to provide a lithium ion secondary battery negative electrode material which is possible to obtain a lithium ion secondary battery having a great charge-discharge capacity.
The preparation method for a carbon material comprises adding a metallic oxide and/or a metal to a mesophase-containing pitch which is obtained by polymerizing a condensation polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon in the presence of a catalyst, and heat treating the resulting product at a temperature of 300-1,200°C in a non-oxidizing atmosphere. A lithium ion secondary battery negative electrode material comprises a graphite material obtained by graphitizing the carbon material produced through the preparation method.
