PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound advantageously by a method in which in the alkyl interchange reaction between N-nonsubstituted aniline and N,N- dialkyl aniline, the reaction is implemented at a specified temperature in the presence of zeolite.
CONSTITUTION: Aniline of formula I (R2, R3 are each H, 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, F, Cl or Br) is subjected to alkyl interchange reaction with N,N-dialkyl aniline of formula II (R1 is 1-4C alkyl) at 200-350°C, preferably 220-330°C, especially 230-320°C in a gas phase or a liquid phase to obtain an intended compound of formula III selectively at a high reaction rate which is useful as the industrial intermediate of dye, stabilizers, urethane, or urea. The reaction proceeds smoothly in a high conversion ratio without substantial cyclic alkylation.
